I'm Quitting Artist Alley! 💖 Chatting about my plans for Ugly Plants and Mental Health
I'm only KIND of quitting Artist Alley. It's ok to change the way you do things! I just wanted to put this out there coz I feel like a lot of people want to sell their art or start small businesses that h a t e doing Artist Alley, so here's my current perspective on it!

    Aaaah I'm having my first booth this week & I kinda just wanted to watch some videos about it but it makes my anxiety so much worse. Like the whole "booth mood" thingy.....I sell oil paintings & prints and both is like completly different (the art style is not but what I draw paint is)😅 But I guess that fits to authentic-to-yourself/your art.

    • @uglyplants
      @uglyplants Рік тому

      Oh no! Don't watch things that make you feel worse 🥴 the "booth mood" thing can also just be in regards to your aesthetic. All artists have their own style, aesthetic, voice etc so my tip just means, if you can, have your booth reflect that! plus my tips don't apply to everyone/every setting, either. mainly for merch/design tbh. so just be yourself <3333

    This spoke to me so hard. I'm not nearly as successful as you are but I used to do conventions on the regular and then obviously stopped for the pandemic. I've only done 2 conventions I think since things have settled a bit and I like meeting people and doing the whole thing but I definitely am not as into it as I used to be. I feel like producing products to sell has become more of a chore and I am not prioritizing it because I feel like I don't have enough time for the things I actually want to do. I just want to make things once in a while and sell some stuff casually lol

    I have always been the person who's like, "...but what about my downtime?" Certainly makes growth hard. XD I've been thinking about doing more events this year than before, but have lots of time between each one, but... Idk, it's hard to do a lot without traveling out of state, and I'm trying to keep my stress low, so those things are kind of at odds. I move the most items in person vs. online, but maybe I can just be okay with that. XD Like you said, I don't want to quit *every* event, but I want to have fun and have some breathing room in my schedule.

    • @uglyplants
      @uglyplants Рік тому

      I feel you so hard! Events are such a big chunk of income it's really hard to reconcile. For me, I'm really looking around at other kinds of events and trying things just outside of the "anime" realm (and it def helps to be in Los Angeles where there's always something). Sometimes it's a bust, but the stress is much lower, so that's been kind of how I'm finding the balance! If we can't breathe and have fun what is it all for anyway 😵‍💫

    • @cottonbook9229
      @cottonbook9229 Рік тому

      @@uglyplants I've done like 3-4 outdoor markets that have been a bust, so that's been discouraging when I know I can make so much more at an anime con, but I do believe some good non-anime events are out there! Being in that in-between state of trying things out but not securing the events that would really be right for me is really what has pushed me back towards anime cons to try to even it out. Hoping to get settled with something that works for me soon! LA sounds like it would have a lot more stuff geared towards our niches, so I'm sure you'll be able to find some good ones!

    Thank you for sharing all of this! I’ve been a fan of your work for many years and it’s so cool to hear more of the behind the scenes! One question - with the manufacturers you work with, is there a way to make sure that they are companies you ethically want to work with? I know “ethically” can mean different things but for example, paying their workers fairly or trying to be more sustainable. Is that info that little peeps like us can find out?

    • @uglyplants
      @uglyplants Рік тому

      Hey! Long answer incoming! That is a common question and to really get to the heart of the issue would require like, a dissertation. “Ethical” is extremely broad in terms of what people mean in regards to goods and manufacturing, so artists need to establish their own sets of questions to ask manufacturers in that research stage, and to a certain extent it's impossible to know every detail of every step of the way- this would even be true if you're sewing at home buying fabric from Joann. For me, and super basically put: I work with factories that are very transparent about their facilities and staff (photos, answering questions about workload and production lines, for example). I had plans pre-pandemic (rip) to visit my factories and hope to do so in 2023 and 2024. I make sure my factories don’t outsource work to other factories and that they are open to visitation from their clients. I'll also say: this question should be posed to anyone manufacturing anywhere, INCLUDING within the United States. I should also note there are NO large-scale plush manufacturers located in the US at the time of writing this, so to produce plush that aren't artisan-grade, you pretty much have to outsource. Hope that helps a bit!

    I remember people on tiktok accusing a woman of gatekeeping her manu costs because they were curious how to start manufacturing, so when I told them to expect to spend around at least 8 grand for 500 plushies they were like.....SO shocked LMAO one commented like "....USD? " This was a great video! Im familiar with the process but you had tips i've never considered before and will absolutely be using in the future :D

      That price seems reasonable! $16 each. It sounds like a lot up front but that's why many people do Kickstarter or pre-orders. That's my plan... It's my dream to sell plushies and apparel some day ❤️

      omg YEAH people really throw that word around on tiktok way too easily and then! get mad!!!! at the answer!!!! hahaha like yes that's....just what this costs! Don't say I didn't warn you!!! hehehe I'm glad you found this helpful! :DDD

      I hiiiiighly recommend Kickstarter! Then the up front cost is completely balanced out hehe I want to do another video about Kickstarter for plush too!

      @@uglyplants if you did a video on doing a Kickstarter for plush I would be soooo appreciative ❤️, it's scary to navigate all of this for the first time 😅 this video helped me feel like I'm capable of creating a plushie one day though, so thank you!! 🙏

    I know this is old video, but that question about "how much to bring," from the many many craft fair videos I've watched, the recommendation is "how much money do you want to make?" That isn't to say bring an entire walmarts worth of product, but if you bring product that only makes up to $500 and you sell out too early, that's a loss of profit. But if you pack $1500 worth of product as expectation and end with $1k, you still made more than unestimating your sales.

    Omg I love your plush and I'm totally binge watching all your videos! I'm considering selling my plushies at bigger conventions with much higher traveling costs. But unlike print makers we can't just reprint digital artwork. Each plushie takes at least a couple hours to make. So I'm worried about investing a couple thousand into traveling, hundreds of hours of sewing, only to break even. The fear of wasted time is what gives me anxiety. As somebody who sells plushies yourself, is it worth it to sell them at big conventions? Thanks in advance!!!!

      Hiiiii ok so I just got done at a convention and was literally thinking about making a video addressing this topic so I’ll probably have a more in depth answer VERY soon but my short answer right now for 2023 is honestly no! I would definitely start as local as you can to gauge the interest first- that’s what I did when I started! I shared tables at my hometown con and got to see what people actually were interested in! The convention scene has changed SO much post pandemic that I am reconsidering my own high-cost shows too fwiw so this is my real opinion hehe ❤️ hope that’s helpful in the meantime!!!

      @@uglyplants Thank you for all the information! I really appreciate it. I'll stick to local for now and consider bigger conventions in the future. Can't wait to watch your upcoming videos!

    Oh my gosh, this looks like it was so much fun! I miss this energy, but my local con Animazement doesn't have as much fashion programming, so I just barely leave the table in the end 😅 Maybe I'll have to travel again next year for some fun stuff, or try to host a swap meet at AZ.

      @uglyplants Рік тому

      It was actually suuuch a nostalgic energy- being at other cons since the pandemic when Anime kind of blew up, they're just not the same. A small, inclusivity-focused con with heavy fashion programming, good vibes, and tons of friends is just what the community needs!!! I hope it grows and you can come one year, but def host a swap to get some of the community feels coz I think everyone needs it after the last few years <3
